Which towns actually commute well.
Platform-to-platform times tell half the story. Here’s the other half.
Here’s the table nobody prints.
Rockville Centre runs about 38 minutes to Penn, Garden City 45, Massapequa 48, Long Beach 50, Huntington 55, Babylon 58, Northport 68, Sayville 75, Smithtown 80, Port Jefferson 95. Those are platform-to-platform numbers on a good morning, and every one of them gets a few minutes worse when it snows.
The walk is the real variable.
A house ten minutes’ walk from the Babylon station out-commutes a house that needs a drive, a parking permit, and a prayer in Rockville Centre. When we price or tour, the door-to-platform number is the one we measure, because it’s the one you’ll live with twice a day.
Branch matters as much as distance.
Electrified branches like Babylon and Long Beach run more trains and recover from bad mornings faster. Diesel territory further east trades frequency for price, and that tradeoff belongs in your offer math, not in your moving-day surprise.
